    Description

Very unique 1890's pottery saggar fragment from The Akron Smoking Pipe Company which was located in Mogadore, Ohio.
A saggar is a specialized ceramic container which is used to fire ceramic ware in. This saggar had holes and allowed the kiln atmosphere to enter into the container. Saggars would be loaded into the kiln in stacks. With this method, 100,000's of pipes could be fired at one time. Sometimes goods would fuse to the inside of the saggar after repeated uses. If the goods fused too much, they would be broken in the removal process. Once a saggar had too much trash fused to it or was cracked, it would be thrown out. This piece came from the factory dump which now lies beneath a lumber yard.
This artifact would look great displayed with a ceramic pipe collection.
